As a $5 Trillion Generational Handoff Begins, Buyers Can Afford to Be Picky. Here’s What They’ll Pay More For.

Over the next decade, up to $5 trillion in U.S. businesses will change hands as baby boomer owners retire, and with private equity holding about $1.2 trillion in uninvested capital, buyers can afford to be picky. In my latest article for Entrepreneur, I explain why the difference between a good offer and a premium one often comes down to something most sellers never document: culture. Buyers price uncertainty as a discount, so a founder who can't clearly show how their people think, decide and operate will leave money on the table. The fix is to define the values you actually live by, back them with real evidence, and make sure your culture works without you, because a business that depends on its founder isn't an asset to a buyer, it's a risk.
